What is the best compass for hiking?

For most hikers, a simple baseplate compass from brands like Suunto, Silva, or Brunton is the best choice. They’re reliable, easy to use with a map, and don’t need batteries; models like the Suunto A-10 or Silva Ranger are popular because they’re accurate without being expensive. I’d personally avoid fancy digital compasses unless you really need extra features, since a basic one is more dependable on long hikes.

Honestly, if you want something reliable for hiking, I’d go for SUUNTO MC-2 Mirror Compass or a Silva Ranger type, those are super accurate and built for real navigation.
If you’re just starting or want something simple, even a basic Decathlon one works fine, but I’d personally spend a bit more for durability and accuracy.
