I actually used Avios to upgrade to business class on British Airways earlier this year, and it turned out to be one of the best travel decisions I’ve made. I had originally booked a World Traveller Plus (premium economy) ticket from London to Boston for a work trip. A few weeks before my flight, I got an email from BA saying upgrades using Avios were available. I had been collecting Avios for a couple of years through flights and my British Airways credit card, so I figured it was the perfect time to use them.
The process was surprisingly easy. I logged into my Executive Club account, went to “Manage My Booking,” and saw the option to upgrade. It showed how many Avios I needed and confirmed that my fare type was eligible — not all tickets are, so that’s something to watch out for. I clicked through, spent my miles, and just like that, my seat changed to Club World.
When I boarded, it immediately felt worth it. The flat-bed seat, delicious meals, and priority service made such a difference, especially since it was an overnight flight. I even got access to the British Airways lounge at Heathrow, where I could relax and have a proper meal before takeoff.
What I learned from that experience is that Avios upgrades are a great value if you start from premium economy or a flexible economy fare. Sometimes, if business class isn’t full close to departure, BA will open more upgrade seats — so it pays to check regularly. For me, using my Avios this way felt like getting a first-class experience without paying the full price tag, and I’d definitely do it again.
