Is dumpster diving legal in Texas or not?

After seeing numerous videos on YouTube and Instagram, my sister and I are planning to go for dumpster diving. Is it legal in Texas?

Dumpster diving in Texas isn’t explicitly illegal, but its legality hinges on location and local rules. It’s generally allowed on public property (per Greenwood), but entering private property, especially locked or fenced areas, without permission can lead to trespassing or theft charges. City ordinances may also impose restrictions

Dumpster diving in Texas is generally legal when done on public property and where no specific city ordinances prohibit it. Once trash is placed outside for collection, it’s usually considered abandoned. However, diving into dumpsters located on private property—such as behind stores, inside gated areas, or near “No Trespassing” signs—can lead to trespassing or theft charges. Laws may vary by city, so it's important to check local regulations and avoid restricted or clearly marked areas.
