Getting the Southwest Companion Pass was honestly one of the best travel hacks I’ve ever learned. My wife and I love quick weekend trips, and this perk has saved us hundreds of dollars. I earned mine a couple of years ago after opening a Southwest credit card and hitting the spending requirement. Once I got the Companion Pass, figuring out how to actually book flights with it took me a bit of trial and error — but now it’s second nature.
The first time I tried to use it, I had already booked my ticket to Las Vegas and wasn’t sure how to add her as my companion. I called Southwest’s customer service line (they’re seriously so helpful), and the rep walked me through it step by step. After booking my flight, I just logged into my Rapid Rewards account, selected “My Companion,” and added her to my reservation — she only had to pay the taxes and fees, about $11 round trip! Now, I use the Companion Pass all the time — it works for both paid and points bookings, which is awesome. The best part is that you can change your companion up to three times a year if needed, so it’s super flexible. If you fly Southwest even a few times a year, the Companion Pass is absolutely worth it. Once you get the hang of booking with it, you’ll wonder how you ever traveled without it. It’s made flying together so much easier — and cheaper!

To book a flight with a Southwest Companion Pass, first make sure your Companion Pass is active and you’ve added your chosen companion in your Rapid Rewards account. When you book a paid Southwest ticket online or in the app, you’ll see an option to “Add Companion” during checkout — that’s where you assign your companion to fly with you. If seats are available in your fare class, your companion will be added at the same price (plus taxes/fees).

To reserve flights with the Southwest Companion Pass, you will first reserve a ticket with cash or points, and then add your intended companion to the ticket reservation at a mere fee of taxes and charges. You may add the companion at the time of booking or later in your Southwest account and may change the companion a few times annually should you feel the need to.

One can purchase flights with the Southwest Companion Pass by initially purchasing a standard ticket with cash or points and then add a companion to the ticket at a minimal fee, only on taxes and fees. The companion ticket may be added or modified provided that a seat is availed on the flight.

To book flights using the Southwest Companion Pass, start by logging into your Southwest Rapid Rewards account and purchasing your own ticket either with cash or points. Once your booking is confirmed, access the "My Trips" tab, pick the booking, and hit the button "Add Companion" to get your companion's seat at the price of only the taxes and fees. Your companion needs to be pre-selected in your account, and you are allowed to add or change them three times per calendar year.

To earn the companion pass fly 100 qualifying one way flights, or receive 135,000 Rapid Rewards points in one year, you have to first book an original ticket on Southwest and then use the option of adding a companion under My Trips in your Rapid rewards account and then apply the companion pass.
Honestly it’s not that complicated once you know where to look. After you select your flight, there’s an option for “Add Companion Pass” before checkout. You choose your companion and then pay the small government fees. Both tickets link under one confirmation just double-check the names before paying.
