Hey there! I actually went through this exact situation last year when I flew with Delta from Seattle to Tokyo. I had originally booked a Main Cabin seat because I was trying to keep my travel costs low, but as the trip got closer, I started to regret it — that’s a long flight to be cramped in economy! I decided to see what my options were for upgrading to Premium Select or Delta One, and the whole process ended up being easier than I expected.
A few weeks before my flight, I logged into the Delta app and noticed an “Upgrade” option next to my reservation. Out of curiosity, I clicked it and saw both Premium Select and Delta One listed with the price difference clearly shown. I thought about it overnight and decided to go for Premium Select since it was a big comfort boost without the full Delta One cost. The seat was wider, the legroom was great, and the food and service felt way more relaxed and upscale compared to Main Cabin.
One thing I also learned is that sometimes you can find discounted upgrades closer to your departure date, especially if the cabin isn’t full. I even asked at the gate once, on a different international flight, and the agent offered me a last-minute deal for an upgrade.
Now, whenever I’m flying internationally with Delta, I always check the app regularly before the flight and ask politely at the gate just in case. Even if you don’t upgrade every time, it’s nice to know that with a little timing and luck, you can score a much more comfortable seat for that long journey.
