Looking for the process, eligibility requirements, and costs involved in upgrading an international Delta itinerary to a higher cabin.

To upgrade a Delta international flight, use SkyMiles, cash, or Medallion Upgrade Certificates. Log in to “My Trips” on delta.com to check availability. Global Upgrade Certificates (for Diamond Medallion members) allow upgrades to Premium Select or Delta One. Complimentary upgrades don’t apply to international Premium Select or Delta One cabins.

To upgrade a Delta international flight to Premium Select or Delta One, key options are:
  • Use SkyMiles (while booking or via “My Trips” on delta.com or Fly Delta app)
  • Use Global or Regional Upgrade Certificates (if you’re Platinum/Diamond Medallion)
  • Or pay cash through your booking tools or by calling Delta Reservations

Hey there! I actually went through this exact situation last year when I flew with Delta from Seattle to Tokyo. I had originally booked a Main Cabin seat because I was trying to keep my travel costs low, but as the trip got closer, I started to regret it — that’s a long flight to be cramped in economy! I decided to see what my options were for upgrading to Premium Select or Delta One, and the whole process ended up being easier than I expected.

A few weeks before my flight, I logged into the Delta app and noticed an “Upgrade” option next to my reservation. Out of curiosity, I clicked it and saw both Premium Select and Delta One listed with the price difference clearly shown. I thought about it overnight and decided to go for Premium Select since it was a big comfort boost without the full Delta One cost. The seat was wider, the legroom was great, and the food and service felt way more relaxed and upscale compared to Main Cabin.

One thing I also learned is that sometimes you can find discounted upgrades closer to your departure date, especially if the cabin isn’t full. I even asked at the gate once, on a different international flight, and the agent offered me a last-minute deal for an upgrade.

Now, whenever I’m flying internationally with Delta, I always check the app regularly before the flight and ask politely at the gate just in case. Even if you don’t upgrade every time, it’s nice to know that with a little timing and luck, you can score a much more comfortable seat for that long journey.

Upgrading a Delta international flight is actually easier than I expected, but I learned that the timing really matters. On my last trip to Europe, I originally booked Main Cabin to save money, but after a crazy week at work I decided I needed a little more comfort. I checked the Delta app first, and under “My Trips” it showed available upgrades to both Premium Select and Delta One. Prices change a lot, so sometimes it’s cheaper to upgrade a few days before the flight.

What really helped me, though, was calling 888-217-3324 when I wasn’t sure if the upgrade was worth it. I had to make a small modification to my booking anyway due to schedule changes, and they walked me through the upgrade options in real time. Honestly, it was faster than waiting for the website to refresh.

I ended up taking Premium Select, and the extra space and better meals were totally worth it. If you’re thinking about upgrading, check the app first, but if things look confusing or you need to adjust your reservation, 888-217-3324 has been the easiest way for me to sort things out quickly.
