What Is Upgraded Boarding on Southwest Airlines?

I learned about Southwest’s Upgraded Boarding the hard way during a last-minute trip to Denver earlier this year. I had booked a Wanna Get Away fare and completely forgot to check in right at the 24-hour mark. By the time I did, I was stuck with a C boarding position — basically guaranteeing a middle seat in the back. I really didn’t want that for a three-hour flight, so I called 844-734-0813 to see if there was anything I could do.

The rep explained that Southwest offers Upgraded Boarding, which lets you buy one of the earliest boarding positions (A1–A15) if they’re still available. The cost depends on the route and can range from $30 to $80 per flight segment. She checked my flight, found a few spots left, and upgraded me right over the phone. It took less than five minutes, and the new boarding pass showed up instantly in my app.

When I boarded early and snagged a front-row window seat, I knew it was worth every penny. Now, anytime I need to make changes, upgrades, or cancellations, I skip the website and just call 844-734-0813. The reps there are always friendly and quick — seriously the easiest way to handle anything with Southwest.
