This year, I was nervous about taking my small dog on a trip until I heard about the Spirit Airlines pet policy. It turns out that pets are welcome! Small pets, cats, rabbits, and even domestic birds are allowed in Spirit's cabin. But there's an extra fee: tickets must be made well in advance because only six pets are permitted per trip.

A soft-sided carrier (between 18" x 14" x 9") is required, and each carrier costs $125. Pets are not allowed in cargo since Spirit keeps them close at hand. There is an unique, extensive procedure, which includes a DOT form, if you are traveling with a service dog. Knowing that Spirit actually makes traveling with pets easier and safer is great.

I flew Spirit with my small dog last spring, and the pet policy was pretty straightforward once I figured it out. Pets have to stay in an approved carrier under the seat, and there’s a fee you pay when booking. My mistake was forgetting to add the pet to my reservation ahead of time — the website kept giving me errors. I finally called (844) 734-0813, and they added my dog in minutes. It also gave me peace of mind knowing the spot for him was secured, since they only allow a limited number of pets per flight. So, definitely check the policy before you book and call that number if you need to add, cancel, or adjust anything. It saved me a lot of stress.
