Is Upgraded Boarding on Southwest Worth the Cost?

I used to be really confused about the difference between Upgraded Boarding and EarlyBird Check-In on Southwest. I fly pretty regularly for both work and personal trips, so I’ve tried both options over the years. The first time I really paid attention to it was during a trip from Nashville to Phoenix last spring. I had booked a Wanna Get Away fare and totally forgot to check in until late, which left me in the C boarding group — not ideal for someone who likes a window seat!

I decided to call 844-734-0813 to see if there was any way to fix it. The rep was super friendly and explained everything clearly. EarlyBird Check-In automatically checks you in 36 hours before your flight, which gives you a better spot than waiting until the 24-hour mark, but it’s still random. Upgraded Boarding, on the other hand, lets you buy one of the first A1–A15 spots if available. It costs more (usually between $30–$80), but you board almost first and can pick any seat you want.

That day, I went with Upgraded Boarding, and it was worth every penny. I snagged a front-row seat with extra legroom and was off the plane in minutes after landing. Now I always call 844-734-0813 to handle any upgrades or changes — they make it quick and stress-free.

I used to wonder if Upgraded Boarding on Southwest was actually worth the extra cost, and after a few different experiences, I’d say it really depends on the situation — but for me, it’s been worth it more than once.

Last spring, I was flying from Austin to Las Vegas for a quick weekend trip with my friends. I forgot to check in right at the 24-hour mark (which, as every Southwest regular knows, is the key to getting a good boarding position). By the time I finally remembered, I was in the dreaded C group. Normally, I wouldn’t care too much, but this was a packed flight, and I really didn’t want to end up stuck in a middle seat at the back.

At the gate, the Southwest agent announced that Upgraded Boarding was available for $50, so I decided to give it a shot. It bumped me up to A10, and I got to board right after the Business Select passengers. I found a window seat in the second row with plenty of overhead space — totally worth it for the peace of mind and comfort.

Since then, I only purchase Upgraded Boarding when it really matters — like for longer flights or when I need to sit with my partner. Otherwise, I rely on EarlyBird Check-In, which is cheaper but less guaranteed. So, if you value boarding early and choosing your seat without stress, yes, it’s worth every penny.
