How to use united credit the smart way

I learned how to use my United Airlines travel credit the smart way after one of those classic travel mishaps — a last-minute cancellation. A few months ago, my trip from Seattle to Austin got canceled due to bad weather, and instead of a refund, I received a flight credit. At first, I had no idea how to use it or when it would expire, but after a bit of trial and error, I figured out a few tricks that made it super easy.

The first thing I did was log into my United account and look under the “My Trips” section, where I found the travel credit automatically linked to my profile. You can also check under “Travel Credits” in your account dashboard to see exactly how much you have and the expiration date. What’s nice is that United now lets you use your credit for anyone — not just the original traveler — which came in handy when I booked a surprise flight for my sister.

When I finally used my credit, I made sure to apply it toward a fare that allowed changes without penalty, just in case plans shifted again. I also waited for a fare sale to stretch the value even more. Using it during a promotion basically got me an upgrade for free!

One lesson I learned is to always double-check the terms — credits usually have an expiration window, so don’t sit on them too long. Now, whenever a flight gets canceled or plans change, I don’t stress out. I just treat those credits like prepaid travel funds and plan my next trip strategically. It’s a great feeling turning a canceled flight into your next adventure!
