American Airlines uses an automated upgrade waitlist. After you request an upgrade, passengers are placed on the list based on priority factors like elite status, upgrade type, fare class, loyalty points, and request time. As seats become available, upgrades are cleared automatically—sometimes before departure or at the gate.

On American Airlines, the upgrade waitlist is a priority list for seats in premium cabins when they’re full. After you request an upgrade, you’re placed in order based on factors like your fare class, elite status, and when you made the request. Higher-status members and earlier requests get higher priority. If a seat becomes available before departure, the airline clears upgrades according to that order. You can usually see your position in the upgrade list online or in the app.
