How can I upgrade to Business Select on Southwest?

I actually upgraded to Business Select on Southwest for the first time earlier this year, and it was surprisingly easy once I understood the timing. Southwest doesn’t have “first class,” but Business Select is the closest thing — mainly because you get those coveted A1–A15 boarding spots, a refundable fare, drink coupon, and priority check-in.

My first attempt was totally accidental. I had booked a Wanna Get Away fare from Dallas to Phoenix for a quick work trip, but the night before the flight I realized I really needed to be one of the first people on the plane so I could grab an aisle seat near the front. I had a tight connection and didn’t want to be stuck in the back waiting to get off. I checked the app expecting to buy EarlyBird, but it was sold out. That’s when I noticed the “Upgrade to Business Select” option.

Honestly, I hesitated because Business Select isn’t cheap. But I was surprised to learn that sometimes the fare difference is smaller on less-busy routes, and that day it was much less than I expected. I paid the difference and instantly jumped to an A4 boarding position. The boarding stress disappeared completely.

Another time, I didn’t see the upgrade option online. I thought I was stuck with my original ticket, but when I got to the airport, the Southwest agent told me that sometimes Business Select upgrades only open up day-of-departure at the counter. She checked availability, saw one slot left, and upgraded me on the spot. If you don’t see it online, it’s always worth asking.

My friend has also upgraded using Upgraded Boarding, which isn’t the same as Business Select but gets you the A1–A15 spots. You don’t get the refundable fare or drink coupon, but for some people, the early boarding alone feels close enough. I used that method once when I didn’t want to pay the full Business Select difference.

What I’ve learned:

  • If you want Business Select, check the app regularly, especially within 24 hours of departure.
  • If nothing shows, ask at the ticket counter or gate — they often have last-minute openings.
  • Sometimes the price jump is big, but other times it’s shockingly reasonable.

Every time I’ve upgraded, the stress-free boarding made the whole trip smoother. If getting on early matters to you, it’s absolutely worth exploring.
